We were delighted to see so many Year in Business
students at our YIB Preparatory workshops. Students were given the chance to
hear from Final year students just back from their placement years and also to
see videos of former YIBs giving tips on what students should do in their 2nd
year to find a placement. Across the 2 workshops 2nd years heard
from students who had done placements at Asahi beer, BMW, Deloitte, Honda
Europe, Jaguar Landover and Pixl.

The best things about their placements:
·
Tips they offer 2nd years seeking
placements
Some of the key messages include:
•Start early and don't give
up ; be confident and keep persisting with applications (It’s a numbers game)
•Tailor your applications -
quality is important.
•Get advice from Careers – get
your CV checked before making your first application and go for practice
interviews. Use all the resources from the Careers’ service.
•Don't be afraid to apply
for well known companies, but also consider small companies or those you
have not heard of – apply for a mix.
•Keep a track of your
applications and a timetable with deadlines. You do need to put aside time for
making applications but obviously don't let Academic work slip.
•Take on board any feedback from
placement companies – see this as a process which can build your resilience and
help your future Career prospects.
Immediate next steps shared with YIBs included:
·

- Book a 1:1 with Sonia Dhaliwal in the Placements’ Place office – number 10 of Moore building (contact MN-YIB@rhul.ac.uk) to review your plans for application
- Start researching your placements using sites such as https://www.prospects.ac.uk/ ; External job sites (eg Rate my Placement, Indeed, Glassdoor, Targetjobs, linkedin, company websites) and internal sites (eg weekly email vacancy bulletin, YIB facebook page, Careers’ portal)
