Welcome Week event for 1st year YIBs

It was fantastic to see so many Year in Business students at the YIB Welcome event last week. Students heard from the new Academic Director for the programme, Dr Chika Oka, and the YIB Programme Officer, Katharine Radford who works alongside Sonia Dhaliwal, the Programme Advisor, in the Placements’ Place office (number 10, Moore building)

We were also delighted to have some Final year YIBs at our Welcome week event, including Max who did his placement at Enterprise Rent a Car, Juree whose placement was with PiXL and Connor who worked at Ascot Wealth Management for a year. We also watched an inspiring video from former Royal Holloway Business and Management YIB, Hippolyte Petit who did a Digital Marketing placement with The Walt Disney company: http://yibprofile.blogspot.com/2016/10/hippolyte-petit-walt-disney-co.html .

YIBs were reminded that the responsibility for choosing and securing a placement lay entirely with themselves but that they would be offered help and support at every stage by the Placements’ Place team and Careers. New YIBs were given 5 key areas to focus on during their 1st year.

    1.  Attend all lectures/workshops and work hard to get good grades
2.1 year average required for ALL YIB students to progress to 2nd year
Good attendance record required in your Lectures/ Workshops
Attend ALL YIB events and workshops

    2.  Engage in a lot of co-curricular activities
Eg Volunteering, sports, societies.

    3.  Get work experience on your CV : micro placement scheme, part time work; spring insight week or summer internship

4 Set up a Linkedin profile
Start networking with Companies at Careers events and previous YIBs

All of these areas will help strengthen a student’s CV when looking to make applications for placements at the beginning of the 2nd year. We have already heard from a 2nd year who has secured a placement for 2020/21 which she was offered on the back of a summer internship she has just completed at the same company. There is a clear message – what you do in the 1st year can help with your success in obtaining a placement.

We talked about the many benefits of undertaking a placement year, from increased confidence levels to enhanced employability prospects and potential for higher grades.

We quoted some former YIBs including Andrea Totaro who did a placement year at SAP and has been offered a full time position as Chief of Staff. While on placement Andrea said:  “ I think Year in Business is the best thing you can do at University for 3 reasons:

It gives you business awareness and understanding

It can help you secure a Graduate job if you give your best during your placement year

It helps you to grow as a person – after 6 months in SAP I was a completely different person: I gained confidence and I learnt more about the business “

Another YIB Ellen Pearce who did a Finance placement with Enterprise Rent a Car in 2017/18, graduated with a first class degree from Royal Holloway (2019) and has returned to a Graduate position with Enterprise said of the placement year:

“it helped my confidence to grow as well as my abilities/ knowledge of accounting and this massively helped in my final year. I was able to apply real examples to the modules and had a better understanding of them which helped for the exams!"

Do drop by the Placements’ Place if you have any questions for Sonia or Katharine and look out for the Micro placement induction sessions which will be running from w/c 30th September.
