This
interactive game provided students with a great opportunity to put their
business and marketing skills into practice. Students had to decide in which
city Enterprise should next open their Car Club brand and in doing so developed
key skills in communication, teamwork, leadership and presenting. We heard some
good analysis of why students had chosen particular cities to launch their
programme and creative ideas for how to spend their Marketing budget. Well
done to the team members who got up and presented their findings to the
audience! This challenge gave a flavour of the sorts of exercises Year in
Business students may encounter when facing Assessment Centres next year.
The students watched a video where previous Year in Business
students talked about why they would recommend a placement year. You can watch
it here: http://yibprofile.blogspot.com/2019/09/rhyb04reco.html
Former YIBs also gave their advice to 1st year
YIBs about what they should be doing now to prepare for making their placement
applications at the beginning of year 2. You can watch the video here: http://yibprofile.blogspot.com/2019/11/rhyib01-yr1-advice-v2.html
The
key messages given by the students to 1st year YIBs were:
• Attend YIB events/ Employer and Career events - start networking
(Linkedin )
• Get active in Societies/ Sports/ Volunteering- strengthens your CV
• Get work experience : eg internship, insight week, workshadowing,
summer job/ part time work, volunteering
• Start thinking about placement areas/ companies
• Start work on your CV ( review with Careers before the start of the Autumn term)
• Work hard to get a good grade in your 1st year (60% average required to
stay on the programme)
We have set up Psychometric test pc lab workshops w/c 16th March for student to practice (dates on timetable) Previous YIB Alvaro says: "Psychometric tests were an essential for all my placement applications, in fact they are the key for getting through the recruitment process of most placements whether you do it online or once you are invited for an interview. I highly recommend to get your head around these as early as possible, how they work and what to expect from them as different companies will have different types of tests”
Students also heard from 2nd year YIB Emir Tolanay who has been successful in securing a placement with SAP in 2020/21. Emir talked about how the work experience on his CV and his persistence helped him to secure the position. He highlighted the need for resilience to keep going with applications as he faced many rejections particularly at the start when he did not tailor his applications to the specific role. He advised students to use the resources available, such as the support from Careers to help with CVs and offer practice interviews.
We are thrilled that Emir has secured this position
with SAP and will follow in the footsteps of many Royal Holloway students who
have been on placement at the company including current YIBs Michael and Adam
along with Andrea who now has a permanent role with the company.
If students want to find out more about the types of roles our YIBs have
undertaken on placement they can find many profiles – written and video - on
the year in business blog
There are also more detailed descriptions of different job roles here:

All presentations from the YIB Information evening can be found on the
Year in Business Moodle page.
