1st year YIB/ Car Club Business Game

On January 28th we welcomed the 1st year YIBs to an Information evening which included a Car Club Challenge Business game run by Enterprise Rent a Car and concluded with lots of pizza. The Business game was run by Raj Dohil from Enterprise and final year YIB Kane Nelhams, who did his Management Trainee placement with Enterprise in 2017/18 and is now the Enterprise Campus brand manager at Royal Holloway.

This interactive game provided students with a great opportunity to put their business and marketing skills into practice. Students had to decide in which city Enterprise should next open their Car Club brand and in doing so developed key skills in communication, teamwork, leadership and presenting. We heard some good analysis of why students had chosen particular cities to launch their programme and creative ideas for their big £50,000 Marketing idea. Well done to all students who got up and presented their team's results!

We talked about 4 key focus areas for the YIBs to work on across the Spring/ Summer term to help them get ready for making applications at the beginning of their 2nd year.

1.Get actively involved in Societies/ Sports/ Volunteering in order to develop their skills (eg teamwork, leadership, initiative) for when they make placement applications/ attend interviews.

2. Set up a Linkedin profile, join the YIB Linkedin group and start networking with Employers. There are many events on campus this term where students can network including the Career's Marketing and PR week (w/c 11/2/19) and a number of Employer in Residence sessions.
More about networking here: http://yearinbusiness.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/networking-guide.html

3. Get work experience! This could be part time work while at University, an insight week/ summer internship (search sites such as Student Ladder, E4s, Rate my Placement, Target Jobs) or via your personal network/ Linkedin. The Careers Service (Davison Building) can provide 1:1 appointments to check CVs and offer guidance. https://yearinbusiness.blogspot.co.uk/2016/04/work-experience.html

4. Attend 2 x Year in Business Workshops in the Spring term and start practicing for Psychometric tests/ preparing your CV ahead of your return in September

Workshops for 1st year YIBs are:
Careers/ CV workshop: Monday 11th February ( 4 - 5pm) or Tuesday 12th February ( 1 – 2pm)
Psychometric Test workshops Tuesday 12th March (10 – 11am) or Friday 15th March (9 – 10am)

Previous YIB Alvaro says: "Psychometric tests were an essential for all my placement applications, in fact they are the key for getting through the recruitment process of most placements whether you do it online or once you are invited for an interview. I highly recommend to get your head around these as early as possible, how they work and what to expect from them as different companies will have different types of tests” .

Use the Careers and Employability moodle page to access Practice tests (under Recruitment tests) and CV guidance and check out key questions about Year in Business (Finding a Placement) here: https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/management/yearinbusiness/home.aspx

The students  heard from previous YIBs :
> Hippolyte Petit : Royal Holloway Alumnus who completed a Digital Marketing placement student at The Walt Disney Company and who secured a Graduate job with Sprinkl in New York through his placement.
In a video Hippolyte offers his guidance to YIBs highlighting the importance of active involvement in societies and using social media/ Linkedin : http://yibprofile.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/hippolyte-petit-walt-disney-co.html

>  Vishank Gambhir – 2nd year BSc Accounting and Finance (YIB) who has already secured a placement for 2019/ 20 with The Walt Disney Company. Vishank highlighted the value of his work experience during the Summer of his 1st year and how he believed the skills he has developed as Treasurer of the University Comedy Society helped him in his placement interview.

>Kane Nelhams – Final year Management YIB who completed a Management Trainee placement with Enterprise Rent a Car in 2017/ 18 talked about the breadth of experience he got from his role and the value he places in being able to work part time for Enterprise during his Final year and have a Graduate job lined up for when he finishes.
