1st year YIB Enterprise Car Club challenge

On January 25th Enterprise Rent a Car ran a virtual Car Club Challenge game with the 1st year Business and Management students at Royal Holloway. The Business game was run by Monica Fowler from Enterprise and we were very lucky to be joined by Royal Holloway alumnus Amy Taylor who did a Management trainee placement role with Enterprise between 2016/17 and in early 2020 became the Enterprise Woking branch manager. We also appreciated 2 other branch managers, Rasha and Emma, joining the workshop and helping with the judging. All students who took part in the Business game will receive a certificate of participation from Enterprise and the top team have the opportunity to be fast tracked through to an interview when they make their placement applications next year.

This interactive game provided students with a great opportunity to put their business and marketing skills into practice. Students had to decide in which city Enterprise should next open their Car Club brand and in doing so developed key skills in communication, teamwork, leadership and presenting. We heard some good analysis of why students had chosen particular cities to launch their programme and creative ideas for how to spend their Marketing budget. All the judges were very impressed with the quality of the presentations which had been pulled together during the 45 minute break out groups, of the creativity and of the calibre of student presentations in the Results’ rooms.

This challenge gave a flavour of the sorts of exercises Year in Business students may encounter when facing Assessment Centres next year as well as developing key skills which they can reference on application forms and in interviews.

Amy Taylor’s blog article from when she was a placement student at Royal Holloway and the advice she offers fellow YIB students is still relevant today: http://yearinbusiness.blogspot.com/2017/01/amy-taylors-management-trainee.html

The Year in Business students were also given further guidance about the YIB programme. They were directed to a video of previous Year in Business students talking about why they would recommend a placement year: http://yibprofile.blogspot.com/2019/09/rhyb04reco.html

Former YIBs also gave their advice to 1st year YIBs about what they should be doing now to prepare for making their placement applications at the beginning of year 2. You can watch the video here: http://yibprofile.blogspot.com/2019/11/rhyib01-yr1-advice-v2.html

Farah Hanif is a 2nd year YIB who has just secured a HR placement with Morgan Stanley also offers her top tips for students seeking placements http://yearinbusiness.blogspot.com/2020/12/farahs-top-tips-for-seeking-placement.html

The key messages given by the students to 1st year YIBs were:

Join skills/ employer workshops and start networking on Linkedin

Get involved in Societies/ Sports/ Volunteering – strengthens CV

Get work experience – insight day/ internship, summer job, virtual placement

Start thinking about placement areas/ companies of interest

Start work on your CV (examples on Careers’ moodle page); attend the CV workshop (March date tbc) and review CV with Careers before start of year 2

Work hard to get at least 60% average to stay on YIB programme

If students want to find out more about the types of roles our YIBs have undertaken on placement they can find many profiles – written and video - on the year in business blog
