Year in Business Networking Drinks Reception

On November 12th we hosted a Year in Business School of Management Networking Drinks Reception in Royal Holloway’s stunning and historic Picture Gallery. We were delighted to welcome 2nd year Year in Business students seeking placements, 3rd year Management students currently out on placement, 4th year students back from their placements, Academics with an interest in Employability, Alumni and local companies offering placements.

We welcomed those working at Asahi Beer, Ascot Wealth Management, Handelsbanken, Honda Europe, MGN Events, Prospect Soft and SAP. Our final year Management YIBs who attended represented a large range of additional companies including AWIN, Enterprise Rent a Car, GE, GSMA, HBO, Hitachi Europe, Knight Frank, Menzies LLP, Oracle, Porsche, Richard Davies Investor Relations, Toyota, Travelport and Winser London.

It was great to see networking in action with students selecting a colour sticker to represent how they felt – were they looking for inspiration, looking to share a placement story or were they more established with knowledge to impart? There was a lovely buzzy atmosphere as those in the group exchanged stories, contact details, information over a glass of fizz and selection of canopies.

Waiting for everyone to arrive!

One of our YIB students, Amandip Chand, currently out on placement at Honda Europe, attended the YIB drinks with her manager. Amandip said "I have had the best 6 months at Honda so far. When looking for a placement, I hoped I would find a placement that would allow me to have a "real" job and Honda have certainly provided me with that. I've had the best opportunities to work on amazing projects and experience first hand what HR Operations looks like. Honda have placements in many areas and I would urge you to apply for an enjoyable and challenging Year in Business!  "

This year at Royal Holloway we have established a buddy system whereby 2nd years can be linked to a buddy in either the 3rd of 4th year who has already secured a placement. It was good to see a number of the buddies meeting up at this event. Any other Management YIBs seeking a buddy should contact MN-YIB@rhul.ac.uk or drop by the Placements Place.

This Thursday November 15th the Careers Service are running their Linkedin Day offering students the chance to gain a free professional photograph and drop in for tips on creating their Linkedin profile. All YIBs are strongly advised to set up a Linkedin profile, connect with Companies and Students they have met at Networking events such as the Drinks reception and join the Linkedin Year in Business group. https://intranet.royalholloway.ac.uk/students/news-events/news-articles/november-2018/upgrade-your-profile-on-linkedin-day.aspx

Pizza/ Games Evening - 16th October
Earlier in the term our Networking Event for 2nd and 4th year YIB students took on a different feel. The students were divided into teams and were given a task to work through , simulating the sort of group exercise they would face in an Assessment Centre. The teams had 20 minutes to create a Placement outfit, using bin liners and sticky tape. It was fantastic to see the different year groups working together to produce their outfits and then to parade them on the cat walk to their chosen music in front of a group of student judges!

Well done to the winning team which produced a stylish Gucci creation. The teams enjoyed Dominos pizza to conclude the event. Some met their buddies for the first time this evening and again it was great to see the mixing of year groups and the exchange of stories.
