It was fantastic to meet the new cohort of 1st year YIBs at Welcome Week and then to see them getting involved at various events across the term.
The Welcome week session allowed our 1st year YIBs to meet those 4th year students returning from their Placement years and hear about their experiences in breakout groups. These students had worked in companies such as Ascot Wealth Management, Enterprise Rent a
Car, GE, Hitachi Europe, Menizes LLP, Pfizer, Richard Davies Investor
Relations, SAP,Toyota, World First.
The welcome
meeting included an outline of the programme objectives and highlighted the
benefits of undertaking a placement year:
> To try out a career path and determine if you want to do this long term
> To potentially secure a job offer or be fast tracked through recruitment
> To gain valuable work experience on the CV - highly valued by Graduate recruiters
> To develop increased focus and time management skills - can lead to better Final year results
> Experience increased personal development building self confidence.
Key messages for the 1st years were to get involved, by opting in for a Peer Guide, working towards the Passport Award to enhance CVs; Apply for the Microplacement scheme; Attend Careers and Year in Business events and work hard to secure a 2:1 average as many placement companies seek this.
Follow up events
Follow up
events have included the Go Beyond Fair on October 11th in the Moore building with many exhibits of the ways students could “go beyond” their studies while at
University, including placements, volunteering, societies (enactus and
management societies), management ambassadors, CeDAS, peer guides and study
abroad. There were decorations, games, prizes, music, drinks, candyfloss and popcorn for the students.
1st
year YIBs had the opportunity to talk to Mikaela who did a Marketing placement
at AWIN, Ropa who did a Wealth Management placement at Ascot Wealth Management,
Neelam who did a placement with Knight Frank as a Client Relations Assistant
and Sharon who did an Accountancy Rotation placement with Menzies LLP.
Finally,
just before Reading Week we held a YIB Networking Event attended by close to
100 YIBs.
It was
fantastic to see so many of the students getting involved in the
activities organised by Alex Turner which culminated in students' involvement in the sort of team exercise they may encounter in a future
Assessment centre. We loved seeing your team advertisements for the countries and regions you come from ! There was the chance to meet new people, learn some new
names, eat Dominos pizza and get experience presenting to a group. Well done
everyone who participated!
Final year
Management student, Kane Nelhams, the Campus Brand Manager for Enterprise Rent
a Car shared an overview of his placement as a Management trainee within Branch
2017/18 and the opportunities for students to apply for a summer internship
with Enterprise. https://careers.enterprise.co.uk/job/london/12-week-summer-internship/24824/9678931
