Jeffrey Unerman, the Head of the School of Management introduced the evening and welcomed everyone. He was followed by Dr Catherine Harbor, the Academic Director for the programme and Emma Baker, our Careers Consultant.
Enterprise Rent a Car talked about the benefits of a placement year to students (and also to companies). Samantha Meredith, Enterprises' Talent specialist has kindly produced a video for us in which she talks more about these benefits.
Sam was joined on the evening by Amos Mugyenyi, an Assistant Manager at one of Enterprise's branches who told the students that he himself had been sitting in their position just 3 years before and after a successful placement at Enterprise now enjoyed a permanent position with the company.
IBM then spoke about the Application process and what students could expect if they applied for one of the 500+ placement positions they offer. Duncan Proffitt was joined by 2 current placement students including Royal Holloway's own Gabriella Whitehead. Gabriella encouraged students to feel confident about applying for big companies and to not worry about expressing their opinions at Assessment centres.
2 of our current placement students then spoke about their experiences in their first few months. Slavyana Stateva is currently working for Canon Europe as a placement student within the European Product Planning team. She gave her recommendations to students searching for placements, including seeking out assistance from Careers on CVs, following the Year in Business twitter feed, researching companies before interview and never giving up!
Hippolyte Petit is currently working for The Walt Disney Company within their Marketing Department and gave an animated talk, including videos of some of his work with the Social and Digital acquisition teams (read more on his separate blog article under student profiles)
The 4 other Companies gave brief introductions ahead of the informal "careers fair" where students were able to mingle, eat pizza and talk to the companies about their placement positions
