Call Back afternoon - September 2017

We were delighted to welcome back so many of our Year in Business students (YIBs) currently out on placement at the recent Call Back afternoon.

The students reprsented the following Companies: Affiliate Window, Ascot Wealth Management, Black and Decker, Canon UK, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, GE Renewable Energy, GMSA, Hitachi Europe, HBO, Kantar Worldpanel, Knight Frank, Lemonade, Menzies LLP, NetApp, Oracle, Pfizer, Porsche, Richard Davies ,SAP, Travelport, Toyota and World First.

It was good to hear the YIBs sharing with each other details of what they had been doing on placement to date : many were surprised at the amount of responsibility they had been given in a relatively short time. Students were working across a wide range of roles including recruitment, training and development, digital marketing, client management, wealth management , account manager, business analyst, publicity, marketing, accountancy, finance, management trainee, project management

The students also found out more about the Academic element of their Assessment. Year in Business students need to complete a 5,500 word Case study linking their work experience to the theory studied in the previous 2 years. They also need to provide 8 STAR examples based on their work during the Placement. The assessment accounts for 20% of their final year grade. Students have been allocated Year in Business Advisors and encouraged to engage with their supervisors and to be getting critique of their placement assessment.

The students chatted over tea and many produced placement video profiles which will be shared on this blog http://yibprofile.blogspot.co.uk/. Many YIBs stayed into the evening promoting the programme either by presenting at the 2nd year information evening, talking informally to 2nd years looking for placements or manning company stands at the Employer Placement Fair.

Employer Placement event : September 2017

We were delighted to welcome 10 employers to the School of Management's Year in Business event : Ascot Wealth Management, Costco, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, EY, GE, IBM, PwC, SAP, Toyota and 3M.

Many of our 1st and 2nd year Management Year in Business students attended the evening and were able to speak to representatives from the different companies about their placement schemes. Current YIBs Alvaro and Ropa were on the Ascot Wealth Management stand, while Catherine and Hannah represented SAP and Georgia was on the Toyota stand. We were also fortunate that many other YIBs who have also been out on placement made themselves available to talk informally to the 1st and 2nd years.

The 2nd year YIBs also attended an information workshop where they heard about the steps required to embark on their placement search and the support available from Royal Holloway's Placement team and the Careers' Service. The Careers and Employability moodle page has considerable resources to help students prepare for CVs/ Cover Letters/ Interview skills/ Assessment centres/ Psychometric tests. The 2nd year YIBs are also fortunate to be able to book 1:1 guidance sessions with Careers on Tuesdays (12 - 4pm) and Thursdays (12 - 3pm)

The YIBs also heard from YIBs Mary (HBO); Sharon (Menzies LLP) and Becky (Porsche) about their placements and the recommendations they offered placement students:
